Around

the location

This park invites visitors off the river or the road to experience the outdoors and even camp overnight on one of the campsites– including an accessible campsite and group campsite. This park also offers an accessible restroom pavilion with showers, a covered picnic area with grills, a fire pit, a fully accessible kayak launch and floating dock, and incredible views of the Chattahoochee River. This project was completed in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program, and Trust for Public Land.

Location

history

This site holds significant historical value as part of the land settled by James Hutcheson, who acquired over 10,000 acres across Carroll, Coweta, and Campbell counties through Georgia’s 1827 Land Lottery. The Varner House—a one-and-a-half-story residence built in the late 19th century found at New RiverLands Park—is one of the few remaining structures from the once-thriving County Line community near Hutcheson’s Ferry and is accompanied by the Varner Family Cemetery, which includes ten marked graves and remnants of Civil War-era breastworks. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the 1996 Roscoe-Dunaway Gardens Historic District, the house has seen several 20th-century alterations, including the addition of gabled dormers in the 1930s, asbestos siding in the 1960s, and a picture window in the 1970s.

Due to the structure’s deteriorated condition, the Varner House is currently unsafe to enter. Visitors are welcome to view the site from a distance, but for safety and preservation reasons, please do not trespass on the property.
