description

Standing Peachtree Greenspace is ideally located in the City of Atlanta, where Peachtree Creek meets the Chattahoochee River. Recent improvements—including an ADA-accessible kayak launch and a scenic ramble trail along Peachtree Creek—have transformed the site into Atlanta’s first public access point to the Chattahoochee. It’s also a key part of a bold new vision for Metro Atlanta: the region’s first-ever Camp + Paddle Trail.

Around

the location

This historic 32 acre park and greenspace in Buckhead includes amenities such as hiking trails and access to Peachtree Creek and the Chattahoochee River. TPL began construction at Standing Peachtree in July 2024 to provide universal access and install a fully accessible kayak launch in Peachtree Creek. This side serves as the launch for the Chattahoochee Camp+Paddle Trail–a 48 mile camping and paddling experience connecting five sites along the river through a unique  4-day, 3-night outdoor recreational experience. Opened December 2nd, 2024, this site serves as the city of Atlanta’s first public access to the Chattahoochee River.

This project was completed in partnership with Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program and Trust for Public Land.

Location

history

Standing Peachtree Greenspace, also known as Fort Peachtree Park, has a rich history rooted in Native American settlement, the War of 1812, and the development of Atlanta. Pre-expulsion, this site was home to a Mvskoke (Creek) village and a key trading post, with the “Peachtree Trail” leading from the village to what is now downtown Atlanta. Fort Peachtree was built here in 1814 during the War of 1812. A replica fort was later built and served as a popular stop for school groups. The 1821 Treaty of Indian Springs ceded Creek land, including Standing Peachtree, to the state of Georgia. The land was then distributed through the Georgia Land Lottery.

Security concerns related to the 1996 Olympics led to the closure of Fort Peachtree and the greenspace. Thanks to community efforts and elected officials, the park was reopened to the public in 2014.
