Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, located in west Atlanta, offers a serene escape into nature with its lush woodlands, winding streams, and tranquil springs. Spanning over 100 acres, this hidden gem features a network of natural hiking trails that meander through the ecosystem. Utoy Creek that runs through the Preserve is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. The Chattahoochee RiverLands proposes a tributary trail connecting this greenspace to the main stem greenway.
This 135-mile preserved old-growth forest in Southwest Atlanta’s Cascade Heights neighborhood includes amenities such as natural hiking trails and picnic tables. Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times. Biking is prohibited to maintain the natural hiking trails. There are no restrooms on site.
Cascade Springs was a popular retreat during the 19th century–the area known for its mineral springs believed to have healing properties–and, later, the site of the Battle of Utoy Creek (August 1865) during General Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, adding a touch of historical charm to its natural allure. Remnants of bathhouses from this era can still be found along the trails, where visitors can imagine the once-thriving spa destination. These ruins, along with the serene waters of the springs, offer a glimpse into a bygone era. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Cascade Springs Nature Preserve provides a refreshing experience just minutes from downtown Atlanta.
